Good morning! It’s Monday. There’s a church just a few blocks away from where we’ve been staying. It’s nothing grand by French standards, though stunning by anyone else’s, I’m sure. I’ve never been inside, but I have heard the bell. It’s beautiful, with a deep and sonorous resonance that you feel in your chest. They ring this bell every night before the service. Not once, but twice, but for several minutes.
I’m emotional hearing these… I am remembering the middle school trips I took from our rural area to my university’s carillon… where we were awestruck with the playing in the belfry… One year I had a somewhat physically limited student… who was determined to mount the final rungs of the ladder…the sound and view up there took all trepidation away. Oh man! I was such a young and dumb teacher not having full parental waivers in hand! My carillonneur friend lived with no limitations too… he had only one full hand, but also played piano!
I bet the school nor the university would allow such music class tours now but I’m so glad we got to go! Thank you for the reminder!
Umm……. Every evening?? The bell is beautiful but a tiny bit lengthy. I suspect that when you hear it accompanied by other city sounds it blends in. Perhaps I’m just not properly awake yet. Lol!
What a lovely sound - thank you for sharing it with us! My church has a single bell that we ring just before the beginning of each service - once for every hour of the start time. It’s something I love to do, and the children love to help!
The bell was silent for most of the pandemic, except for the very sobering milestone days when a few of us gathered to ring it in memory of those who had died. We had to stop after the 300,000th death because of the stress on the rope and frame.
So peaceful. And those bells are clearly not automated. I love picturing someone inside the bell tower rhythmically pulling on the thick ropes. The sounds of children walking by are wonderful too!
With the first sound my chest just aches, there's nothing like a good old European church bell!
Thank you for this audio!
I miss the sound of church bells, living in America. Thank you.
Beautiful sounds a blessing I need 🙏

I keep thinking I recognize this church from the photo. Is it Saint-Sulpice?
The quote is perfect!

I'm there
I love the sound of church bells!
Perfect soulful calling for Advent.

There is something so comforting about the sound of church bells.
