I love the word furusato! After a 13-hour trip yesterday, we finally reached our camp on a Maine lake where we’ll reside for the next four months. I always describe the camp as “the home of my heart.” Now I have a lovely word for it. It seems that like German, there is a Japanese word for everything!
As a fairly new reader of yours, I want to thank you for these moments. Today’s hits “home” because you live in my birth state tho’ I haven’t been there since I was six💙
One's "happy place" is probably similar in concept, although furusato may encompass more of the where, the what, the how and the why? I've very much enjoyed our Japanese language adventures, courtesy of you Clara, and your friendly pirates.
Beautiful! Thank you for a week of beautiful words. Interesting about the pirates...last night we saw a pirate ship off of our coast. 3 huge masts, gliding Northwoods, so we weren't too scared they were going to capture us. It turns out that it was an Italian ship called the Anerigo Vespucci. This we found out from my son, who has an app for that!
I just got home to DC from a trip to Europe and thank you for this reminder.
While it is nice to be back to some of the American conveniences we take for granted, German born it is always hard for me to adjust. Things feel bigger but not better in the US these days. And if anybody has ever been through the fever dream of customs at Dulles Airport …it is not a good welcome, yet also a stark reminder of the immense privilege of an American passport.

Yes this spot is also my roots . Missing it last year made my whole year ungrounded in a way.
On to all the festivities this summer!

Your birth state sends its love. Thank you for being here!

Such a pretty scene!
“The home of one’s heart” Yes.
Thank you Clara. I think I have more than one furusato. Maybe my furusato is like a kaleidoscope.😌💖
For me, home is where there is family, and I love visiting them, wherever they are.
Home is where you want it to be!

Right now I want to be that duck.
I have been through that very same Dulles fever dream of which you speak. May re-entry be gentle on you, Anja.
So peaceful. A meditation with my breakfast 😌
Home changes over the years. Have had many, but hopefully this current one holds me and nourishes me for many years.
Lovely.
A wonderful start to my very early day! I’m headed to Nashville for a bobbin lace conference! Flight is at 6:00 am so we just left my house at 3 am.
That's EARLY. Have a fabulous weekend at the conference!
