“An important newsletter for the times.”

Welcome to my experiment in self-care.

I am Clara Parkes, an author and lecturer, community builder and passionate advocate for wool. Like many of you, the pandemic erased a busy year and left me staring into silence and slowly slipping. Needing a daily touchpoint and failing to find just the right balance of brevity, humor, and soul, I decided to do it myself. I launched the Daily Respite.

The premise is extremely simple: Every morning, I email a little nugget as you start your day. A short video clip, a piece of music, a poem, an idea. Nothing too long or too cumbersome, just enough to set you on your path for the day. I love creating it, and people love receiving it.

In her August 10, 2021 On Tech newsletter for The New York Times, Shira Ovide told readers to just watch my Sunday nature Respite video of waves lapping the shore. “It’s soothing,” she explained. Thank you for the shout-out, Shira!

It’s called The Daily Respite because that’s what we need right now: a brief interval of relief. A momentary brightness for our worrying brains. A reminder of the joy that exists all around us, even in difficult times. Not to pretend the world isn’t troubled, but to provide fuel for the journey.

Your paid subscription at $6 per month gives you a moment of relief in your inbox every morning, as well as invitations to the Friday afternoon check-in with a brilliant community of like-spirited respiters.

That’s 365 droplets of relief, one morning at a time, savored in the company of other awesome humans just like yourself.

I’m also making the Respite available for free to those who’ve been laid off or thrown into financial turmoil by the pandemic. I trust you to be honest.
