Good morning! It’s Wednesday, and our Japan adventure has taken us to a particularly exquisite and complex word: mono no aware, the Kanji for which is 物の哀れ. A little context here. Before the big heatwave last week, I cut the above peony and brought it inside. I knew it wouldn’t last long, but I couldn’t bear to let it go just yet. Knowing its ephemerality made every second of its fleeting presence on my kitchen table that much more exquisite, more meaningful.
thank you for teaching us a different culture's approach. Much wisdom.
This is something i am very aware of each year as my husband grows his container flower garden.
Also, though, I think if we keep ourselves with the appreciation perspective we don't have to take things for granted. For instance, evergreens of all "stripes" call to me, and the joy they bring year round is something I always appreciate.
Yes! My husband and I celebrated our 35th anniversary last night at a beachside (literally on the rocks along the shore) restaurant. We drank in the view and watched the sun go down and enjoyed every bite of a very expensive meal. Not something we do regularly but we were completely engaged with our surroundings and appreciating the beauty of our town.
That is like the basswood trees blooming this year. Very fleeting this year, because the heat wave shortened the blooming season, but I managed to see at least one beautiful tree in bloom a couple times. I made sure I really noticed it and made a memory.💖😌
Now if I could only remember this next spring when the lilacs bloom again. I love lilacs & always wish they'd last longer. But they can't & they don't. I'll just take delight in them when they are here.
"Nothing gold can stay"
Love this!👏🏻❤️

Happy anniversary Nancy!
Happy Anniversary!
I love this so much. ❤️
Today’s words of wisdom - take delight!
Lovely concept. I feel that way about California’s jacarandas. Amazing purple flowers on a tree that are short-lived.
Glad to know others delight in the Jacarandas blooming. We have several streets in downtown San Diego with these lovelies.

It is the letting go that we all must do. Surrendering to the moment.
The color of those petals is exquisite! I put my fallen peony petals (dropped undergarments) into a bowl and enjoy the continued perfume.
One of my favorite movie lines”Everything is temporary !!!”. Except for the memories!
Beautifully captured in your photograph.

How very true !!
