Good morning!
It’s Friday, and it’s the last day of February. Spring is still a long way off here in Maine, but some optimistic birch trees have already begun tossing their catkins in hopes of getting a head start on this year’s growing season.
This shapely cluster landed in the middle of the road with an undignified plop. I took the liberty of carrying it to the edge of the woods, placing it in a more hospitable spot, and wishing it good luck.
“In this broad earth of ours,
Amid the measureless grossness and the slag,
Enclosed and safe within its central heart,
Nestles the seed perfection.”—Walt Whitman
Respiteers, shall we plant some seeds together this afternoon? As always, check your inbox right before 2pm EST.
Onwards we go,
Clara
I’m happy to know I’m not the only person who does this!
I’m new to birch trees. What does moving the catkins to a more hospitable spot do? Will a new birch tree grow from the catkins?
