Good morning!
It’s Sunday, and the world beckons. Somewhere out there in the roiling waters, a young humpback whale is exploring our bay. Our friend could be swimming, breaching, slapping, lunging, or singing its heart out—a heart that can weigh upwards of 400 pounds and beat just once or twice per minute. Or perhaps it’s protecting the seals, or playing with the dolphins and porpoises, or simply enjoying our all-you-can-eat buffet of pogies and the occasional stray mackerel.
Since our whale is otherwise disposed, we’ll simply stand here on shore and take it all in.
“Oh, man*! admire and model thyself after the whale! Do thou, too, remain warm among ice. Do thou, too, live in this world without being of it. Be cool at the equator; keep thy blood fluid at the Pole. Like the great dome of St. Peter's, and like the great whale, retain, O man! in all seasons a temperature of thine own.”
—Herman Melville
Onwards,
Clara
* And all humans, I’m sure Herman would agree.
