Good morning! It’s Monday. Over the weekend, the deer dropped by for dinner. Finding us not at home, they did what any reasonably rebuffed guest might do. They wandered around the house and dined on the tulips instead. I know they love tulips. We do too. For 20 years we’ve planted a small number by the old front door. And for 20 years, the deer have had the extraordinarily good manners to eat other things from the garden instead.
I am not quite so generous. After two years of this dropping in, I decided to season the tulips with a little bit of chilli mix (Salsa anyone?). Apparently, the deer do not like picante.
It sounds as though the current adult deer were not educated by their elders re: the care and feeding of tulips. Or.. maybe they just didnt pay attention in their youth and/or misinterpreted the lesson and thought it was about feeding the tulips and not themselves.
We live in a suburban community in California surrounded by vast open space hills. The deer always prefer our expensive landscaping to the offerings in the open space. Years ago, a cousin with a small plane flew us over our neighborhood. I got it- we look like one long delicious salad bar!
At first, I thought you'd been to my yard. I don't mind sharing but when they mow em to nubs they are unlikely to return. Spring is a little farther along here and my lilies look very similar.
Shot weed is edible and there's plenty of that. Could we spare the bulbs?!
I too, cannot plant tulips, or other tasty deer treats! My rose bushes are all fenced in, because deer think that they are fair game, snackwise! But they look so cute when they sneak in and sample!
No sharing in my yard: it’s no tulips for me! The squirrels nip the flowers off and abscond. They don’t leave a single one behind! Sunflowers too later in the season. I plant daffodils and narcissus now.

😞 I recognized that photo immediately ... deer apparently have the same taste in Maine that they do in central NYS.
Deer are the reason we have stopped planting tulips and started planting daffodils instead.
Another perfect example of your kind and generous nature.

Shucks!🙁 Maybe sow some columbine away from the tulips? I know the deer in Washington state like columbine! MAYBE they wd be distracted… 🍀
Such naughty deer. Maybe give them something else to eat? Or the number to DoorDash. LOL
Yes! Arrrgh! This new pack of 2024 deer have been trained to come right up to the front door. There will be no hollyhocks this year.
Thanks for the chuckle this spring morning.
Oh nooooo!
That's awfully generous of you.

Sorry about the tulips, but love the quote!
