Good morning!

Today is Thursday. Yesterday’s Respite left some of you concerned about the bear situation at our house. Worry not, these are black bears. They’re rather like big solitary teens trying to avoid being asked to do housework. Attacks are extremely rare. They much prefer to wander up after dark, sniff around where the bird feeders should be, leave a great big plop on the path, and then saunter back down into the woods. Although, once, a bear did come up to the window and watch TV over my shoulder while sipping from the hummingbird feeder. I keep wishing he’d return, but so far he hasn’t. Maybe they got cable in the woods?

"They’re rather like big solitary teens trying to avoid being asked to do housework."

That is such a good description of a black bear, at least all but mamas with cubs which are a touch less dorky and harmless. Black bears are gradually expanding their range in our direction, 15 miles south of us the occasional feeder gets mauled but so far we can leave ours out overnight even in the spring. Raccoons, OTOH, are here now and they can be brutal!

Fabulous story!! I have the occasional black bear at the feeders also. One was kinda big🥴 and more than once someone has tried to climb up the pole, which naturally broke in half…sigh… Really I prefer my two chipmunks!
