Clara, your imagination implies such a deep inner life. I'm jealous of your ability to share it so evocatively. And thank you for that.

Cather's poetic efficiency is striking. To say "the same five notes over for..." instead of "over and over" or simply leaving "over" out. I wonder if I miss teaching english??

I look at the many grassy areas where houses must have stood and houses like this one in mid-coast Maine that have old apple trees and lilac bushes and think about the people who planted and loved them long ago.
