Good morning! It’s Thursday—and we can’t go back up to the house until we pay our respects to a another, even more dear friend than any of the peonies. This kousa dogwood was born in my aunt’s garden and came east with us in a berry basket nearly 30 years ago.
I love dogwoods; you don't want to know how many disappointments I have had trying to grow them in my yard! So I enjoy them vicariously when driving around. Last year was a stellar blooming of dogwoods. This year however I saw very few dogwood flowers and I am on the west coast. I like the idea that they are taking a breath and building strength for next year!
I rather love how dogwoods don't feel the need to put on a spectacular performance to prove their beauty, they're totally fine laying low and regrouping for the next year.
I’m in a zone ahead and my dogwoods have already dropped their beautiful flowers, so I’m loving your tree’s display! My father and I dug up several small dogwood saplings from my grandmother’s woods probably 40 yrs ago now and one of mine that I planted under a tree canopy in my back yard lived. Took it many years to bloom and is a reminder of the generations of family now passed. ❤️
A most magnificent tree when in full bloom. I'm fortunate to have a profusely blooming dogwood I can see from the kitchen window. Just glorious and it blooms for weeks!
I come from a family of gardeners, both professional and amateur. When I was a child my Dad would walk with me around our property and point out all the various trees, shrubs, bulbs, etc. I have a special love for dogwoods; they were the first trees I could identify. <3
Flowering trees/plants blossom more profusely when stressed (by drought, etc) so they can produce more seeds. May our true beauty shine like them when we are stressed!
Exquisite! I’ve never seen that bloom. Thanks ❤️
Oh my, the picture of last year's blooms is spectacular! My neighbor (in Maryland) has a beautiful one and it didn't do much this year either.

A well deserved break.
Families that share nature share love for many generations. A pause is A must for growth!
What wonderful stories and memories you have❣️How beautiful, and the dogwood as well! Gorgeous leaves, even.
I have to assume you are living only one lifetime, but your ability to find the quintessentially appropriate quote for each day’s post astounds me!
I'm honored you think so!
Pauses—we should take more of them, so necessary for understanding and healing.

Ahhh! I totally understand and love that you, too, have a very dear dogwood friend with such a legacy.
Great quote. Beautiful dogwood flowers.

What a gift to have that legacy and those memories!
Here’s to the pause and here’s to the kousa dogwood!
Absolutely!

Ahh! That would explain it - last year was a heavy drought year. Now I feel like I should be doing more to distribute those seeds.
