Good morning,
It’s Monday, and today is a federal holiday and day of service in the U.S., in honor of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. I tried to find his spirit here in Paris, and, to my great pleasure, I did.
On October 24, 1965, Dr. King gave a sermon here, at the American Church in Paris. It was his first sermon in Paris, and the church was filled far beyond capacity, with a line stretching out onto the sidewalk and down the street.
“I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.”
—Martin Luther King, Jr.
Onwards in truth, love, and community,
Clara
Thank you for this story and these wonderful, hope-filled words. They're much needed today and every day.
Thank you, my dear. I will try to hold on to "temporarily defeated" rather than my current repeating thought that this is the end of democracy as we have known it.
