Good morning!
It’s Saturday, and as our adventure in Japan winds to a close, we’re ready for our most nuanced Japanese word yet: yūgen, the Kanji for which is 幽玄.
I say nuanced because even though yūgen is a word, it refers to a Japanese aesthetic concept that goes beyond words.
Yūgen encompasses a deep and mysterious sense of beauty—an awareness of the fleeting and hidden depths of the universe, of its profound grace and subtlety.
For example…
“To watch the sun sink behind a flower clad hill. To wander on in a huge forest without thought of return. To stand upon the shore and gaze after a boat that disappears behind distant islands. To contemplate the flight of wild geese seen and lost among the clouds…”
—Zeami Motokiyo
That is yūgen. And may we continue to hold space in our lives for it.
Onwards,
Clara
I love this idea!!!
Beautiful Clara. I am especially good with the wandering in forest or in the hills in my car with no thought of return for awhile.💖😌
